PrimeSafe was established on 1 July 2003 under the Seafood Safety Act 2003 and the Meat Industry Act 1993 which expanded the responsibility of the former Victorian Meat Authority to include seafood safety, in addition to red meat and poultry food safety. PrimeSafe is also responsible for the regulatory management of pet meat and pet food.
As a condition of licence, meat and seafood processing facilities are required to maintain adequate procedures within their quality assurance program to ensure compliance with standards relevant to their processing operations.
Under the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ), PrimeSafe has nominated DQS as one of the accredited third party audit bodies to monitor quality assurance systems at meat and seafood processing facilities.
